Anti-hypertensive drug and ME

APO-ATENOL AND ME.

The most familiar drug to me is APO-ATENOL. It is very familiar to me because Apo-atenol is being administered by my dad. My dad is a hypertension patient for almost 8 years. Apo-Atenol is a beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent with predominant blocking effect on beta-receptors.

It comes in a solid dosage form which is administered orally.  It is 50mg tablet. It has round, white, flat faced, bevel-edged tablet. It is available in the box of 30 tablets. This drug need to be protected from light and moisture and stored between 15 and 30 degree Celsius.

This drug is prescribed to my dad with another antihypertensive agent which is thiazide diuretic. It is administered for two times in a day by my dad. It works very effectively that it lowers my dad’s blood pressure.

One day my dad accidentally administered 150mg of  apo-atenol due to forgetfulness. He suddenly started to feel dizzy and very uncomfortable. We quickly rushed him to the hospital to get medical treatment.

I was further curious about the Apo-Atenol my dad consumes. I tried my very best to learn about the drug since I’m a pharmacy student. It is an antihypertensive or a anti-anginal agent. According to the information I have learnt that approximately 10% of  the atenolol is metabolized by human body. 3% of the material recovered in the urine.

It is also a controlled drug. Over dosage of this drug can cause bradycardia, congestive heart failure, hypotension, bronchospasm  and also hypoglycaemia.  I collected all this information to make sure I’m aware of the drug my dad is consuming.

I further then collected some of the following informations which I think might be useful.

Diuretics  increase the amount of sodium and water excreted into the urine by the kidneys. It lowers blood pressure mainly by reducing the volume of fluid in the blood vessels. For example:
1)      Acetazolamide
2)       Indapamide
3)       Chlorthalidone

Beta blockers will block the effect of adrenaline on the cardiovascular system, reduces stress on the heart and arteries and slows the heart rate. For example:
1)Acebutolol
2)Atenolol
3) Betaxolol
4)Metoprolol
5)Nadolol

Calcium channel blockers will dilate the the arteries and sometimes reduces the force of the heart’s contractions. For example
1)Amlodipine
2)Isradipine
3)Nisoldipine

Agiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors also known as ACE inhibitors will dilate the arteries. For example:
1)      Benazepril
2)      Captopril
3)      Quinapril

This drug is really close to my heart since it treats my dad’s medical condition.

CHEMISTRY AND ME!

Chemistry first walked in into my life when I was sixteen years old. I was a little freaked out when I went to a book store to buy my very first Chemistry reference book. The only thing that was running in my mind was “how many problems does a sixteen years old teenager suppose to solve?” The book was loaded with many problems to be solved.

Then I tried to convince myself and attended my very first chemistry lesson. That was the first time my teacher introduced us to the periodic table. I was stunned to see all the alphabets arranged

My most favourite theory that was thought was The Arrhenius Theory. In which Arrhenius acid is a substance that produces H+ in water and Arrhenius base is a substance that produces OH- in water. My teacher loves teaching us by illustrating many diagrams to explain the theory that were involved in Chemistry.

Besides the entire lesson I’ve learnt in Chemistry there are also a joke that I will never be able to forget. It happened last 2009 on my organic chemistry lab. The experiment that we suppose perform involves the usage of alcohol. The alcohol that was given to us was ethanol. All of us started our experiment. A friend of mine (name was not allowed to reveal) was walking all around the lab to get the ethanol. She finally stood up near to my bench and asked me “ tisha, where is the alcohol?” while holding a bottle of ethanol. I answered “your holding it!” she kept on asking us where the alcohol while holding a bottle of ethanol is. I, Shangari and Janiss had a good laugh when we watched her doing that.

Pharmaceutical chemistry 1 was quite hard for me. All the chemical properties, physical properties, identification test and assays drove me crazy. Now, I wonder what pharmaceutical chemistry 2 has for all of us. No matter what chemistry i'm pretty sure we will fall in love with each other very soon!!

Ri-Rihanna.
Ni-Ni-Nicole.

Gonna win it no limit, strong women we are.
Gotta win it no limit, strong women we are.
Gonna win it no limit, strong women we are.
Gotta win it no limit, strong women we are.

Chorus
Where them girls at. (Girls at).
That like to be in charge.
When the heat get too hot, they just keep turnin’ it up.
Never let ‘em see see, that you sweat, gotta go hard.
Where those winning women thats really willin to take it off!
Where them girls at. (Girls at).
That like to be in charge.
When the heat gets too hot, just keep turnin’ it up.
Never let ‘em see see, that you sweat, gotta go hard.
Where those winning women thats really willin to take it off!

Verse One
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
When you see both of us on catwalk representing our culture.
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
Well the time and day has changed, where the women wear the pants without changing the last name.
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
Where the word diva, diva, mean viva, viva, we run las vegas.
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
And then the stock exchange, bang, Than we got claim to the change.

All, all, all a girl want, wants.
All a girl need, needs.
Its just all those, simple things like to be cared for.
Just to have him, be there for.
All that matters, it’s those sweet things.
That’s all a girl really wants.

Verse Two
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
We are too confident, me and her talk to Phil, never happen again.
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
We don’t wait, we get paid, for a trait holiday, we sip lemonade.
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
Instead of doing what he wants, we do what we want, buying homes in Geneva.
Uh-uh-uh-uh huh.
Like when the sound baby glance, rings, and that means more than things.

All, all, all a girl want, wants.
All a girl need, needs.
Its just of those, simple things like to be cared for.
Just to have him, be there for.
All that matters, it’s those sweet things.
That’s all a girl really wants.

Chorus x2
Where them girls at. (Girls at).
That like to be in charge.
When the heat get too hot, they just keep turnin’ it up.
Never let ‘em see see, that you sweat, gotta go hard.
Where those winning women thats really willin to take it off!
